Read the latest Access Unlimited newsletter online

Greetings to all of you from Sydney Australia.

Whilst I have been discussing Access databases with managers and IT staff this year, I have often heard the phrase "We don't support Access databases". I then ask the question, do you support Excel and the reply is "yes but we don't support macros (VBA)".

So here are three questions to YOU, the readers.
Have you noticed this behavior?
What parts of Access should IT staff support as a minimum ?
What are three things that IT help teams should know about Access so that they can provide at least some support?

You will find my email address at the top of this page so let me have some feedback on this topic and I will write up your notes for the next newsletter.

Enjoy the newsletter and if you live in Sydney or England, check out the good value conferences coming your way VERY soon.

Access Team Blog ~ Ryan McMinn Joins the Access team in Seattle.

When I was in Seattle earlier this year, Ryan McMinn gave an inspirational talk on connecting Access to online services such as Amazon. In this article Ryan discusses Ruby On Rails in brief and how his previous company was involved in a project that had both a Thick Access interface on the local network and Ruby on Rails as the web interface to the same mysql backend database. Well done to Ryan on joining the team at Microsoft, your experience with hooking into online databases will be great for the future of Access.

  Repair Damaged Access Databases

vb123.com offers an online repair system for Access databases. Included in the latest version is the option to only repair tables rather than fix the whole database. This reduces the cost of exercise. The system is setup so that your data is encrypted before it is transmitted and in most cases, you should be able to recover a corrupt database in less than 30 minutes elapsed time. "I know that it works because we use it from time to time." Garry

  Access and the Kaspersky Anti-Virus

I have just installed Shield Delux 2008 as my antivirus (it calls Kaspersky Anti-Virus) and it works well on my laptop, it is the first time I have ever been able to work whilst a full scan was happening in the background. One problem is that the software actually detects when you first run VBA code in an Access 2000+ database. Read more about this on Alex's blog.

To turn off the Access/Office protection in Shield Delux, head to Proactive Defense settings and review your Office Guard settings.

  Open Office has a database

With the latest download of Java from Sun, you now can easily download the free OpenOffice suite. The wide install base of Java will mean that the Open Office platform will receive a boost in numbers because lets face it, when faced with a choice of free and pay for MS Office, many home computer users will adopt the free package. Anyway in OpenOffice is a small database product called Base that can do things with Access databases plus it has its own database. This looks a bit version 1.0 but with Google's version 1.0 of its database released a few months ago, maybe finally Access will have a competitor that Microsoft will worry about. Read more

Where are the commands in Access 2007

This Microsoft Flash demo tells you where commands can be found in Access 2007 that you might expect from 2003. ie When you hover over the Print button on the 2003 toolbar, the demo tells you to click on the Microsoft Office button, point to Print and then choose Quick Print.
