Greetings to you all from Sydney Australia. During the last month I have been busy.setting up a database that combines a SQL Server database with a number of million record line tables (ODBC links), two access databases and 3 linked text files. Amazingly if you respect the primary keys when setting up your interface, everything hums along at a reasonable pace. Included in the this is a Tab control that holds five sub-forms of related data. My hat goes off to Access, it is a wonderful tool for pulling data together.

Enjoy the newsletter.

Right-Click Microsoft Access Menus ~ Excerpt from Garry's Protection Book

Right Click menus allow Access users and developers flexible access to all the built-in menu items and, indirectly, to any objects in your database. Though this flexibility is good for a developer's productivity, it is not necessarily so good when it is available to the users of your database. In my experience, most users are interested in software that makes their job easier. Right Click menus bulging with developer options (such as the Design View and Database Window commands) probably do not assist in that aim. In addition, if users are technologically competent, they may be tempted to alter the programming objects of your database. Therefore, it is important that you learn how to use Right Click menus to setup a good user interface and to protect your database at the same time.

TIP: For Access 2007 developers and those thinking ahead, whilst the old menus and the top toolbars may have been replaced by ribbons, right click menus still persist in the user interface. So if you can add your custom right click menus before upgrading, your database will be protected in Access 2007 as well.

  Repair Damaged Access Databases

vb123.com offers an online repair system for Access databases. Included in the latest version is the option to only repair tables rather than fix the whole database. This reduces the cost of exercise. The system is setup so that your data is encrypted and in most cases, you should be able to recover a corrupt database in less than 30 minutes elapsed time.
