Read the latest
Access Unlimited newsletter online |
||
| In this
newsletter, you will find a few links to my blog. What is a blog you may
ask, well in my view it is a vertical website that consists of postings
(or ravings of a mad person) from newest at the top to oldest at the
bottom. What makes them interesting from my point of view is that you
guys can make comments on the postings and it features a built in RSS
feed. On a related topic, during the week I was pondering the term Wiki when I read in a newspaper article that every company should use them. After a bit of research it turns out that they are based on the giant Wikipedia online encyclopedia. To me they sound like a tool for people who want to collate and organize information but don't want to spend a lifetime learning a web creation tool. There is never enough time in a day to learn everything ... Enjoy the newsletter. Garry Robinson Access MVP and Editor of vb123.com |

Using a form field as a parameter
in a crosstab query |
||
| A client asked
me how to use a form field in a crosstab query. Initially I thought it
would be a matter of adding the following in the criteria field of a
query [Forms]![_MyApplication]![cboProduct] but it wasnt. Read my blog for the solution... |

My First Video ~ What to do about
Macro Protection in Access 2007 |
||
| This video
shows you the best way to manage macro protection in Microsoft Access
2007. In other words it allows you to make sure that the message bar
that says Security Warning "Certain content in this database has been
disabled" no longer appears. Garry Robinson has written an article on
this topic for Microsoft in the MSDN Web site. The video shows you how
to set up a trusted location for your databases. Sorry about the clarity, Google video hosting reduces the bandwidth to make it faster. Also remember I am not a newsreader by trade Explore your data with this versatile graphing and data mining shareware tool. Read More |

Access 2007 makes incompatible
MDE's |
||
| The MDE
compiler that comes with Access 2007 makes MDE files that are compatible
with Access 2007 only and have no compatibility with Access 2003 or
2002. Whilst there has been technical arguments before as to why this
should happen, in this version there is also the ACCDE format as well
that is incompatible. The long and the short of it is that you will
still need Access 2003 or earlier if you want to make MDE files that
your slow moving clients can use. Of course my Access Workbench will help you run multiple versions of Access in this case so that you can both try the new version of Access and compile with the old version of Access on some databases. |

Repair Damaged Access
Databases |
||
| vb123.com
offers an online repair system for Access databases. Included in the
latest version is the option to only repair tables rather than fix the
whole database. This reduces the cost of exercise. The system is setup
so that your data is encrypted and in most cases, you should be able to
recover a corrupt database in less than 30 minutes elapsed time.

| If you are a
developer, I am interested in taking to people who can walk into a
client's office, talk specifications, build good data models, sort out
messy Access applications and keep the users happy. This is not full
time work and may only amount to a single project or two a year. If this
is you, contact me by email. If you have contacted me, don't worry, we
haven't forgotten about you. Garry Robinson |

Spreadsheets |
||
| Excel is a far
more popular tool in the real world than Access, and whilst most
developers will find it a clumsy tool to develop in, the reality is that
many systems are set up in Excel. Irrespective of the obvious technical
merits of storing the core data in a database, spreadsheet users have
learnt how to achieve good results in a spreadsheet and are generally
enthusiastic about their own applications. It is into this world that I
find my team's Access skills being called upon time and time again. So why is an Access developer called into the Excel world in the first place? Read the article and others about how Access is being adopted in the real world. |
