Don't Delete Your Old Versions of Access / Office
Accidentally
|
If you are an Access
developer and are about to install Microsoft Office 2007
on a computer that already has an earlier version of
Microsoft Access, read these instructions carefully or
you may delete your old versions of Access. This article
is important because the Office 2007 setup wizard
deletes old versions as a matter of course.

Beta Version of the Workbench For Microsoft Access
Released
|
Build a zip file of
the database whose name includes the version name
(requires Winzip or similar). Very handy for keeping
backups of release versions of your database and also
for mailing to clients to install. Zips are also
available through the Folders tab.
I would love to have comments from all you Workbenchers
on this. Are you using Winzip, what would you like to
zip in the Workbench.

management and development tool on this page.

Sore Shoulder ~ RSI
|
Last year I suffered
with a sore (frozen) shoulder. After much trial and
error with many different devices and DragonDictate, the
best solution that I found was a small square keyboard
from Lenovo/IBM that I could sit on my lap. See the link
if you suffer from shoulder or RSI related issues, this
may offer some relief as you don't have to raise your
arms to the desk and you can use the scratch pad instead
of a normal mouse.
Another good things about these keyboards are that if
you get a sore neck from having a (hot) laptop on your
lap, stick the laptop on a table (I use a TV dinner
table) and put the keyboard on your lap. Garry

PROFESSIONALS ~ OUR NEW SERVICE
|
If you need help with
Access database projects , we have some talented and
experienced people who are based in the Eastern states
of Australia. So if are having trouble with an Access
database, need help doing the tricky stuff like
upgrading to SQL Server or simply need a mentor, call me
on (02) 9665 2871 or email me at access@gr-fx.com
Otherwise if you are a developer, I am interested in
taking to people who can walk into a client's office,
talk specifications, build good data models, sort out
messy Access applications and keep the users happy. This
is not full time work and may only amount to a single
project or two a year. If this is you, contact me by
email.

Repair Damaged
Access Databases
|
vb123.com offers an
online repair system for Access databases. Included in
the latest version is the option to only repair tables
rather than fix the whole database. This reduces the
cost of exercise. The system is setup so that your data
is encrypted and in most cases, you should be able to
recover a corrupt database in less than 30 minutes
elapsed time.

Garry's Access Security Book
|
My book on protecting
and securing Access databases received its 14th 5 star
review at Amazon USA making it one of the highest rated
Access books at Amazon. It looks like it's getting
harder and harder to purchase the book so don't delay
any more..

Correct Vista Version
|
If you feeling brave,
read this article on selecting a version of Vista.
Garry's view is simply wait until you need a new
computer and do it then. Remember that there is no need
to have Vista to run Office 2007.

Access 2007 Developer Extensions and Run Time Are Free
|
Everyone in the Access
developer community has been pretty grumpy about the
lack of new developer improvements in Access 2007. Well
now they (you) might be a bit happier as the Access
developer extensions and runtime toolkit are going to be
free.
In the Access 2003 developer extensions, there was a
buggy but useful find objects and property tool and a
startup wizard that did some nice things. As for the
runtime toolkit, I am surprised that it is still being
supported given the other developer things that were
dropped in Access 2007. Anyway it is and it might get a
lot more popular now that it is free.

Uniquely Identifying Database Records
|
This is a well thought
out article on how to set up a primary key. As these
gentlemen probably work with much larger databases than
normal Access database, they tend to understate natural
keys.
I find that records/tables are easier to navigate/debug
with natural keys and I never find performance is a big
issue. But it is good to have all views on this
important database topic so read on.
