Updated page on transferring Excel to Access |
A number of the Microsoft Access projects that I have been involved in are in essence rescue missions for spreadsheet systems that have outgrown themselves. With good design and a few compromises, you can turn these into database systems that have easier navigation for input for users, report equivalent output and they do not require spreadsheet skills to run. This article tries to capture the techniques that I have used over the years to get these conversion projects up and running smoothly.

AUSSIE CONTRACT WORK |
In the last two newsletters I asked for skilled Access developers to to help us with our projects in Sydney, Brisbane or Melbourne. I now have met or have corresponded with some very talented people and we are keen to help you on your projects. So if are having trouble with an Access database, need help doing the tricky stuff like upgrading to SQL Server or simply need a mentor, call me on (02) 9665 2871 or email me at access@gr-fx.com Otherwise if you are a developer, I am interested in taking to people who can walk into a client's office, talk specifications, build good data models, sort out messy Access applications and keep the users happy. This is not full time work and may only amount to a single project or two a year. If this is you, contact me by email. Garry Robinson |

SQL Server Cascade update glitches |
If you have two separate fields in one table that uses referential integrity/cascade updates to another table, you will run into trouble upgrading to SQL server. This page discusses the problem. The message that you will see in the upsizing Wizard report will look like [Microsoft][ODBC SQL Server Driver][SQL Server]Introducing FOREIGN KEY constraint 'tblDirtMovements_FK05' on table 'tblDirtMovements' may cause cycles or multiple cascade paths. Specify ON DELETE NO ACTION or ON UPDATE NO ACTION, or modify other FOREIGN KEY constraints. |

Repair Damaged Access Databases |
vb123.com now offers an online repair system for Access databases. Included in the latest version is the option to only repair tables rather than fix the whole database. This reduces the cost of exercise. The system is setup so that your data is encrypted and in most cases, you should be able to recover a corrupt database in less than 30 minutes elapsed time.
