  PUT YOUR DATABASE TO WORK

Online databases might be a good thing for keeping control of
your software but if you want to be found in the search
engines then they are not much use. You can get around this by
publishing a static web page for each make or model in that
database. That might give you 100 additional web pages that
could help you drag in new customers.  Of course the content
of those pages is important as is the suitability to search
engines but that is a story for another day.  Remember that
just because you have a great looking web site ....

While I am at it, I went around the Access web loop looking
for sites with decent help and tips etc that I could add to
a customized AltaVista search facility that I was going to add
to VB123.  In summary, most of the sites that had good
programming material were not registered with AltaVista.
Why I don't know but getting your site indexed Is Important.

If you want to go directly to the Add-URL pages of the biggest
search engines, then try the list at

or check out the Access Web Ring

MAKING A PROFESSIONAL LOOKING WEB SITE  (USING FRONTPAGE)

The first 4 lessons about making a web site that looks good
have now been published.  Here is a summary of those pages

Knowing your fonts is a very simple way to improve the
readability of page.  Most of the big sites use a font called
Verdana whenever they publish a page with a lot of text and
even on their busy main pages in smaller format.

Width is very important on pages filled with lots of text.
If you use a newspaper analogy, do you ever see a page
filled with text from one side of the page to the other.
Using tables or FrontPage borders or even frame sets
can reduce the width and make pages more readable.

Don't forget to add your page header title and meta tags such as
keywords, description and title before you close down a page.
These are critical for search engine success.

Ed knows that a web site design can be emotional as your
favourite blend of coffee so these pages only serve as suggestions.
I have also include links to sites that know a lot more than Moi.

-------------------------------------------------------------
  HARDWARE BUGS

One of the local Aussie visitors asked if there was a known
fix for large Access databases getting corrupted when
transferring large files.  Turns out that the corruptions were
due to Win98 adapter drivers not working with Realtek 8029
network adapters (occasional corrupt datapacket). Fix is to
update with the latest driver issued out this month.

See Article Q189778 in MSDN.

Lessons from this are
... search MSDN
... sometimes it can be a hardware problem.
... keep reviewing those backup strategies.

-----------------------------------------------------------

SEARCH FOR CD'S AND BOOKS ONLINE

The most popular page on our web site is a page that allows
you to compare prices of Compact Disks and Books at
Amazon, CDNow, CDUniverse, Borders and other big vendors.
The page is a little daggy but the search facilities are
quite useful.

And finally a really useful Knowledge Base Article

--- DATA SHAPING - ASP

A new feature of ADO 2.0 is the ability to work with hierarchal
data sets.  The real strength of this new way of handling
recordsets is for web technologies but if you want to think
outside the circle, then this is worth a look
