Tidying Up The Pages Before You Publish Them

Now that we have made the text a more readable width, click here to see what we started of with so that you can appreciate what a difference width and font can make to pages filled with text.

Before you post the pages to the web, there are a few little chores that you should do to make your page more readable to search engines  and to FrontPage web components such as Navigation Bars and Tables Of Content

Give The Page A Good Title

Right click anywhere in your current page and choose

Page Properties

Now type the title of the page into the title row (as shown in figure 1).

Note:  The Title is very important in FrontPage.  If you are using the Navigation Bar, having long titles will make for very cumbersome menus.  But if you are not going to use the Navigation Bar then the long menus can be quite useful in the Table Of Contents as shown here.

Set Your Page Up For The Search Engines

Before you close the page properties Tab Sheet, copy the title that you just typed in into the paste buffer .  Now select the Custom tab.

Click on  Add

Type Description into the name row and paste/type your page title into the value row.

The description is the 2 or 3 line description that turns up in the search engines under the link to your web page.  If you do not type this in you will end up with the first 2-3 lines on your web page which may not encourage people to read your page.

Before you finish here, you should type in the keywords tag (as I have done in figure 2 above) using

Give The Page A Heading

Returning to the newspaper analogy, every page in a newspaper has a heading telling you what the page is about.  So add one in an strong bold font as I have done to the top of this page.
