Real World Microsoft Access Database Protection and Security
- A book by Garry Robinson
Why Migrate from Access to SQL Server?
Bonus Chapter by Russell Sinclair.
ONE WAY THAT YOU CAN IMPROVE
your Access data security is by migrating your
database to a server-based database such as SQL Server, Informix, or Oracle. If
you
have already migrated a database to an enterprise-quality database product like
one of these, you will appreciate that this process is not a trivial task. If
you haven’t,
then let me assure you that it is worthwhile that you understand both the
benefits
and the pitfalls of such an undertaking long before you take the plunge with
some
real live data.
To help you make up your mind, Russell Sinclair and the gang at Apress have
allowed me to reprint a chapter from Russell’s book, From Access to SQL Server.
In
this chapter, you will find out things about Access to SQL Server migration,
like:
• Why migrating a database that has been in use for a long period of time is
more involved than migrating a brand new database.
• Why big Access tables are a impediment to Access performance. (Remember
that Chapter 5 in my book shows you how you can work out your largest
tables.)
• SQL Server can process the query on the server and return only the results,
thereby freeing network traffic.
• SQL Server handles multi-user issues, such as locking, much better than
Access, especially when compared with Access 97.
• Introduction into the differences between Access and SQL Server security,
maintenance, and cost.
So, if migrating your database is something that you think you should consider
or is something that you have tried and felt like you need more information for
the
