Next Tip GRAF+FX  -->  Visual Database Exploring Samples

Graf+FX®  shows you a number different ways that you can start building your own data mining / fast graphing solutions using Microsoft Access.   This software is provided as part of The Toolshed.

Method 1:   A Microsoft Access 97 Library of routines that allows you to add data mining functionality to your own Access Database.  With an imported and fully documented drilldown template form and the Graf+FX library, you can explore your databases with graphs and queries using a technique called Data Mining. You can also a quickly generate/prototype Access Graphs without running the graph wizards. And when you master these techniques, you can then fine tune the interface or even build your own using the power of the Graf+FX functions, subroutines and the drilldown class object.  Comes with full source code.

See a demo of the form that you import

Methods 2 & 3:   A Microsoft Access database with full source code that will allow you to start fast graphing any table/query and commence drilldowns on the data.  Click to see one form

Download The Library Help File    (the best way to understand whats on offer)

Method 1:  The Library Method

You add the data mining library to your database in 3 steps

bulletYou import the (3) template forms from the  userObjects database into your database
bulletYou open a new code module in your database and establish a reference link to the graf+FX.mdb.   Alternatively, just import the library modules into your own database.
bulletYou open the graf+FX form that you have imported into you database and verify that the libraries work.  This will give you drilldown capabilities to 5 levels.

Graf+FX also allows you to explore other Access databases using external queries.

A more versatile option is provided to allow you to explore other Access databases through the exploring databases option at the top of the screen. (show below). This allows you to use a hidden feature of Access SQL syntax. Selecting an external database rather than using internal queries, tables and linked tables allows your users Access to other data sources without having to setup new linked tables or import data into your database.

Method 2:  Your Own Datamining Interface(s)

Unzip the database.  Link to your tables.   Click on the refresh systems tables button and start graphing   !!!   You do not need any additional licences once you start using this program.  There is also a similar interface that shows you how to use table and query filters in your drilldown queries and graphs.

Features The Graf97+FX Library Will Add To Your Database Include

bulletFast Access graphs from any of MS Graphs objects or use our special designs
bulletDrilldown on any table or query
bulletDrilldowns are viewed using group by queries
bulletFull source code so that you can take the software where you want to go
bulletUse any of the graf formats provided or create your own layouts
bulletView the SQL or save the query from any of the drilldowns
bulletSave your grafs as forms for later reuse in your own application.
bulletThe template form is fully documented so that you will understand the calls to library.
bulletThe template form links to the library help file so that you can easily reference a call for each form event.
bulletFully Callable Procedures Library (Functions and Subroutines)
bulletPlus you will devise your own ways to use the drilldown class module in your application far better than we ever could.

Smart Graphs  You can take control of your Microsoft Charts and make them far more feature packed using Visual Basic.   Click here to see the Smart Graphs that you can manipulate in Graf+FX.

Installation

First you must have Microsoft Access 97 or Access 2000/XP

Secondly you must install Microsoft Graph when installing Access 97/2000 or Microsoft Office 97/2000.

Then unzip the file graf*+FX.mdb library database into any directory that you like. You then need to follow the instructions in the help file  graf+FX_Start.hlp before commencing to import the objects into your own database.

Before thinking that this is the answer to all your data mining needs, you should be an Access programmer. If you are not, then you may be better of purchasing Graf-FX as this has been setup for instant use on your data.  Even though Graf-FX  is also available with full source code in the programmers pack, it is more complicated by virtue of its greater feature list.

Licensing Information + Ordering

Graf+FX comes complete with full source code.   You may use the software as a library and documentation is provided to describe how you would do this.  Alternatively, you simple import the modules and class modules into your database and use them in your Access application.   The software does not have any security restrictions.
